I have never been a cooking person. I have always been an eating person. Until this summer. For many years now I have admired the talents of other chefs, but never had the confidence to be a chef myself. Anything I made was out of necessity. My love for cooking is a suprising addition to my summer experience, one I welcome with joy. It all began with three kids. The most amazing children I have ever known. Their names are Makenzie, Alex, and Evan. Each of them in their own way light up my world. I have spent the past two months living life with them. If there were ever a crash course in motherhood, I'm pretty sure they've been it. Thanks to the kids and their appetites, I can add these recipes to my apron: Maple Salmon Zuccini Bread Fresh Blueberry Muffins Pacman Pancakes (my specialty) Tomato Cream Sauce (for pasta) Frog Cupcakes Buttercream Frosting Herb Sliders Galletes Lemon Chicken Orange-Roasted Chicken French Dip (for sandwiches) and Spaghetti Factory Pesto Salad Dressing As I've caught the cooking bug, I have realized what a therapy it can be. When I'm stressed or tired it feels good to create something delicious. Another therapy I have discovered through my summer adventures is running. Three weeks ago I joined the gym with my aunt. I have always wanted to be a runner. I love Nike, I want a hot body, and I think running is just plain cool. But I am terrible at challenging myself. We decided to start a program called the "couch to 5K" on the iPhone. Well let me tell you, the first day of running consisted of 30 second intervals and I barely made it. Over the past three weeks we have woken up four times a week at 5:45 (before the kids get up and dad has to leave for work) and run. Every workout the time increases and I fall more in love. I have never exercised in such a satisfying way. I am so excited and driven to increase my time and improve. Even more than the joy it brings to have such a good workout, I am so happy I can call myself a "runner" now without lieing. There you have it. Two ordinary things I have discovered in my unoridnary life.
